Seeing a doctor in Australia without Medicare
Medicare is Australia’s public health system, and most visitors aren’t covered by it. That’s fine. You pay for your visit at the end, and we give you an itemised receipt to claim back from your travel insurance. Check your policy for what it covers.
We accept all credit and debit cards including Amex, plus Apple Pay, Google Pay and cash.
Visitors from the UK, Ireland, New Zealand and parts of Europe
Australia has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with 11 countries: the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Slovenia. If you’ve enrolled in Medicare under one of these, bring your card. Services Australia explains who is eligible.
What to bring
- Your passport or ID
- Your travel insurance details
- Any medication or prescriptions from home
- Your vaccine records, if you need travel vaccines
Lost or run out of your medication?
Bring the packaging, a photo of it, or your prescription from home. The doctor will review it and see what can be prescribed in Australia.
